How to Find an Apartment for Rent in Bali (Without Getting Scammed)
A step-by-step guide for finding a real, fair-priced Bali apartment in 2026 — what to ask, what to avoid, and how to verify the landlord.
Finding an apartment in Bali in 2026 is fast — there are dozens of options posted on Facebook groups, Airbnb, and local agents every day — but it is also easy to get scammed if you transfer money to the wrong person. Here is the playbook we use with every new tenant.
Step 1 — Decide Your Stay Length First
Bali apartments are priced very differently depending on how long you stay:
- Weekly (1 to 4 weeks): premium price, walk-in ready, no commitment
- Monthly (1 to 11 months): the sweet spot for digital nomads — best value, fully furnished, fast WiFi
- Yearly: lowest per-month price, often unfurnished or semi-furnished, ideal for expats settling down
Before you message anyone, decide which bucket you are in. It changes the area, the budget, and the type of contract.
Step 2 — Pick the Right Area
Each area of Bali has a totally different vibe. Quick guide:
- Canggu / Berawa / Pererenan: digital nomads, cafes, surf, lively
- Seminyak: beach clubs, restaurants, walking-friendly, lively
- Ubud: rice fields, jungle, yoga, quieter, cooler weather
- Uluwatu: clifftop views, world-class surf, more remote
- Sanur: family-friendly, calm beach, expat retiree feel
- Jimbaran / Kuta: central, near the airport, mixed vibe
Step 3 — Always Ask for a Video Walkthrough
Photos lie. Videos do not. Before you transfer any money, ask the agent to send a fresh video of the apartment, today. If they hesitate, walk away. We send video walkthroughs on WhatsApp the same day, no exceptions.
Step 4 — Verify the Landlord
In Bali, most apartments are owned by Indonesian landlords represented by an agent. Reputable agents will:
- Send you the contract before you transfer
- Accept partial deposits (not 100% upfront)
- Be available on WhatsApp 7 days a week
- Have a real office address and Google reviews
If any of those is missing, slow down.
Step 5 — Use a Local-Currency Wise Transfer for Big Amounts
For monthly or yearly leases, never wire to a personal foreign bank. The cleanest way is Wise (or Revolut) in IDR or USD to a verified local IDR bank account. This protects you and gives traceability.
